Siklus merupakan perulangan peristiwa yang biasa terjadi di alam. Siang berganti malam, akibat rotasi bumi pada porosnya. Musim silih berganti akibat kemiringan poros rotasi bumi terhadap bidang orbitnya mengitari matahari (ekuator bumi membentuk sudut 23,5 derajat terhadap bidang ekliptika). Berbagai perioda siklus matahari telah diidentifikasi, baik dalam jangka puluhan maupun ratusan tahun. Salah satu yang mudah diamati adalah siklus aktivitas 11 tahun. Fenomena ini bahkan sudah diketahui oleh para pengamat matahari sejak abad ke-17, mengingat metoda yang digunakan sangatlah sederhana, yaitu menghitung jumlah bintik secara rutin setiap hari.

Ketika kita menatap bintang di langit malam, kita dihadapkan pada kubah raksasa yang disebut bola langit. Orang yunani kuno membagi bola langit ini ke dalam daerah-daerah yang disebut rasi. Sampai saat ini diketahui ada 88 rasi bintang. Nama-nama rasi ini kebanyakan bersumber dari mitologi Yunani seperti Canis Major, Ursa Minor, Scorpio, dan Orion.
